Selected "Expert install" from the menu. When the backup completes, select "reboot" to boot into your freshly installed SteamOS. After Steam finishes installing, your system will automatically reboot and create a backup of the system partition. Once you are connected to the internet, close this UI and Steam will install itself. If you do not have an internet connection (for instance, if you need to connect to a WiFi access point) you will get a popup telling you this.Ĝlose the popup and you will get the network configuration UI where you can set up your network. If you have an internet connection, Steam will automatically install itself. At this point an internet connection is required. After installation is complete, the system will reboot and automatically log on and install Steam. The rest of the installation is unattended and will repartition the drive and install SteamOS. Selected "Automated install (WILL ERASE DISK!)" from the menu. 
If there is no UEFI entry, you may need to enable UEFI support in your BIOS setup. Make sure you select the UEFI entry, it may look something like "UEFI: Patriot Memory PMAP".(usually something like F8, F11, or F12 will bring up the BIOS boot menu). Boot your machine and tell the BIOS to boot off the stick. Put the USB stick in your target machine.Unzip the SteamOS.zip file to a blank, FAT32-formatted USB stick.Once completed, boot a PC or laptop with it in, select it as the boot device and hey presto.WARNING: Both installation methods will erase all content on the target computer Automated Installation This will take a while so get yourself a cup of tea 😀 Leave the other options as default and press start.I would recommend leaving using DD Image mode as this can prevent the dreaded “Failed to Detect and Mount CD-ROM” message when using the USB drive to install Kali to another PC You might get a warning about installing in hybrid mode:.You may be prompted with a warning message:.Press Select and browse to the ISO you downloaded from the Kali website.
Select the USB drive from the device list. If you have difficulty because its partitioned and so has multiple letters (or not letter), go to Disk Management (by pressing the Windows key and typing Computer Management), delete all the partitions on it, create a new partition and assign a letter to it. Downloadsĭownload the Rufus utility for creating a bootable USB drive from an ISO ( or download from my site here) Prepare the Driveįirstly, plugin a USB drive and confirm the drive letter for it. Note: I highly recommend Kali Linux Revealed as a great reference text, whatever your level. This guide assumes you’re using a Windows computer to prepare the bootable USB drive and you already have a 4GB drive (or greater) ready to format and use. 
I thought I’d write a quick update guide on installing Kali Linux from USB as I’m hoping to encourage more friends to install an instance and start playing.
